2002 Calendar of Events

  • January 3 - Paul Weishaar
    Lecture:  Bonsai Soils, Part 1
    Club President Paul Weishaar will repeat his lecture on bonsai soils.  The lecture will include a discussion of the various elements and additives that can make up bonsai soils, including a comparison of several completed soil mixes.

  • February 6 - Paul Weishaar
    Lecture:  Bonsai Soil, Part 2 Additives, Fertilizers, and Insect Control
    Paul will expand on his previous months lecture on bonsai soil and include discussion of different bonsai fertilizers and ways of controlling insect pests that may plague your bonsai.

  • March 6 - Simon Feng
    Demonstration:  Styling a Juniper Bonsai from Nursery Stock
    Simon will do a demonstration of the styling of a juniper topiary that he purchased at a local garden center into a bonsai.

  • April 3 - Simon Feng
    Demonstration:  Potting / Repotting Your Bonsai
    Simon will do a demonstration on repotting bonsai using two of his trees (possibly a Siberian elm and a Root-Over-Rock trident maple).  Members are invited to bring in their trees for assistance and feedback in repotting.

  • May 1 -
    Workshop:  Non-Tropical
    Material TBA
    We will have a bonsai workshop using a non-tropical species of plant material.  Species will depend on what is available.

  • May 18 - 19
    Indianapolis Museum of Art Bonsai Exhibition
    Public exhibition of club members bonsai in the Herron Hall at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.  Hours are 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM both days.  Map to IMA.

  • June 5 - 
    Workshop:  Bring Your Own Tree
    The workshop will invite club members to bring in their own trees and get input and assistance in addressing styling, display, and care related issues.

  • June - Date TBA
    Stone Collecting Field Trip
    Members will take a field trip led by Mike DeVore to collect stones for bonsai.

  • June 8 - 9
    Garfield Park Bonsai Exhibit and Sale
    The IBC Bonsai Show is part of a three day event at Garfield Park which encompasses the entire park and includes a variety of events including exhibits, roving musicians, food and drink, and a bonsai workshop to be announced.  A full schedule will be published when available. Reservations will be required for the bonsai workshop.  Hours are 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM both days.

  • July 3 - Mike Devore
    Demonstration:  Tropical Bonsai. 
    Mike will present a tropical bonsai demonstration using one or more species of tropicals grown in his own greenhouse.

  • August 7 - Mike Devore
    Workshop:  Tropical Bonsai
    Participants will have a choice of tropical bonsai provided by Mike on which to work.  Reservations required 14 days in advance.  Cost to be announced. Observers welcome.

  •  August 10 - Annual IBC Members Garden Tour
    We are repeating last year's well-received tour of IBC members' Bonsai Gardens.  This event is for IBC club members only.  Any members wishing to have there bonsai garden added to the tour, please let the Directors know.  A schedule will be published later.

  • September 4 - Eric Elliot
    Presentation:  Juniper Bonsai Specimen
    Eric will bring in specimens from his excellent collection of juniper bonsai to discuss.

  • September 7 -
    Penrod Art Fair
    The Indianapolis Bonsai Club will participate in and have bonsai on sale at the Penrod Art Fair at the Indianapolis Museum of Art.  This is our primary fund raising event and any member is welcome to bring bonsai and supplies to sell.  Hours are from 10:00 AM - 5:00 PM.  Map to IMA.

  • September 21 - November 17 - 
    White River Gardens Bonsai Show
    The club will repeat its very successful show at White River Gardens Conservatory, next to the Indianapolis Zoo.  The exhibit will be shown in the White River Gardens Greenhouse.  The Club will also sponsor a bonsai sale at the Gardens on Saturday and Sunday, September 21 and 22.

  • October 2 - TBA
    * Membership fees are due at this time.
  • October 12 - 25
    Garfield Park Chrysanthemum and Bonsai Exhibit
    Annual show of chrysanthemum and bonsai at the Garfield Park Conservatory.  Hours are from 10:00 AM to 5:00 PM

  • November 6 - Rob Pugh
    Demonstration:  Bonsai Tools
    Rob will give a demonstration on the various types of tools used in bonsai and discuss their uses, as well as the appropriate care of them.

  • December 4
    Annual Christmas dinner at the Chinese Ruby restaurant, gather starting at 6:30 PM, dinner 7:00 PM.  Dead bonsai contest and bonsai material raffle.
